Thank you for your response.

I agree with you about the battery not being the problem for the same
reasons. I also have to agree with you on the version of the files I tried
to copy into the newer system folder. In addition to what you suggest as the
problem, could the file format between the two differently formatted drives
have anything to do with the hanging boot sequence?

My plan includes putting the disk into a 4400 clone and format and load a
system on it. The iMac won't finish boot up, and does not respond to
keyboard commands. I am using a WinBest keyboard connected through a PS/2 to
USB adapter. I was wondering if the keyboard commands could be getting
interpreted incorrectly, because the keyboard is not an Apple brand? I can't
shut off extensions with the shift key, and I tried holding down the space
bar, as suggested, but with no change in boot up sequence. Any ideas about
this?

The extensions in OS 9.03 and OS 8.1 are very different (version
numbers, etc.). You will need to replace the UDF volume access from a
machine running OS 9.03 or at least some version of OS 9.
You could install OS 8.1 on the iMac. Both Rev A and Rev b iMacs (the
233 mhz ones) shipped with OS 8.1.
It is probably not a hardware issue. If your motherboard battery is
bad, you will lose setting such as the date and time each time the iMac
is shut down.
