I recently bought a bondi 233 iMac (OS 9.03) from someone that got it

thinkas a security measure. Makes sense.
To get the file from a 6100 running 8.1 formatted (older file system, notHFS+)I networked the two computers. Copied over the file from the 6100
to the iMac and put it in the system folder. Now the iMac does not
complete the desktop build. The iMac still does not recognize a system disk (OS9)
in the CD-ROM during startup holding down the C key and Command + C as alternatives. Nadda.
I tried to hold down the shift key on the keyboard during startup, but all extensions loaded so I could maybe get the desktop built with out the
faulty extension loading. No luck.
Any suggestions?

The extensions in OS 9.03 and OS 8.1 are very different (version numbers, etc.). You will need to replace the UDF volume access from a machine running OS 9.03 or at least some version of OS 9. You could install OS 8.1 on the iMac. Both Rev A and Rev b iMacs (the 233 mhz ones) shipped with OS 8.1. It is probably not a hardware issue. If your motherboard battery is bad, you will lose setting such as the date and time each time the iMac is shut down. Gary Fortman
Thank you for your response.Try booting with either or both shift keys depressed. I assume your keyboard has two shift keys. Or try option-shift, with combinations of the option keys and shift keys. Other keyboard startup info is here:
I agree with you about the battery not being the problem for the same
reasons. I also have to agree with you on the version of the files I tried
to copy into the newer system folder. In addition to what you suggest as the
problem, could the file format between the two differently formatted drives
have anything to do with the hanging boot sequence?
My plan includes putting the disk into a 4400 clone and format and load a
system on it. The iMac won't finish boot up, and does not respond to
keyboard commands. I am using a WinBest keyboard connected through a PS/2 to
USB adapter. I was wondering if the keyboard commands could be getting
interpreted incorrectly, because the keyboard is not an Apple brand? I can't
shut off extensions with the shift key, and I tried holding down the space
bar, as suggested, but with no change in boot up sequence. Any ideas about
this?

Do you have an Apple USB keyboard to try? I'm not sure if third party keyboards behave in the same manner. When trying to troubleshoot a problem, your chances of success are greatly increased by reverting to Apple original equipment.
It's been over a year since my last interaction with OS 9 or lower, but as I recall, to have a CD drive work, you also need the extensions "ISO 9660" and "foreign file access".
Since you just received the iMac, I would highly recommend a "clean install" of the OS.
Also, as I have posted here several times, when you have severe problems with crashing, try trashing the following five preferences:
Mac OS prefs, finder prefs, sound prefs, System prefs, and General controls prefs. Since your system is new to you, simply drag the entire preferences folder to the desktop. All necessary preferences will be rebuilt upon startup.
