I still don't get it Dan,

You write that your sister has it on for 5.5-6 hours at a time, but you
still insist that she turns it off when she goes to bed, as if the extra
hours will hurt it. I am sure you miss a point or something, and I don't
think telling your sister stupid things will help. I totally agree with Chas
on this one.

My niece has an iMac just like it, although with 384 MB and a new Seagate
Barracuda 40 GB drive, and she doesn't turn it off anymore, as it is
extremely silent anyway. Just because it reaches a relatively high
temperature after a few hours doesn't mean that the temperature will
increase on and on and overheat. Don't worry about that. As long as there is
space for airflow around the iMac, it won't hurt it.

On the other hand, why don't you just upgrade to 10.3.4 - over the airport,
btw, I have no idea why you don't want to use it now you have it ? - I do
all my upgrades on both my Powerbook and my iBook over Airport from my iMac.

But before the upgrade, why don't you run a "Repair Permissions" using Disk
Utility. Won't do any harm, and perhaps even fix the shutdown problems.

(I don't remember when I shut down one of my Macs the last time, btw. They
are always on and only restarted when updates force them to.)

Cheers,

Kim
