told her never to leave it running when not using it, it will overheat

Why in the world would you say such a completely ridiculous thing??

Well because it's kinda true, however I think Dan has slightly misunderstood the context.

I have seen no end of stories here about iMacs of all ages that die from analogue component failure. I am of the opinion (I'm not alone either) that this is a result of heat not being dissipated sufficiently from the boards inside the iMac. I'm afraid there's no substitute for assisted convection (i.e. a fan to suck air out of the top).

Not only will the iMac NOT overheat if left on, it would put ITSELF to sleep automatically after a period of no use.

If the 'sleep after x mins' funtion is turned off in the Energy Saver panel then it won't. I don't think it would overheat per-se if left on unless the room temperature was up in the 90s, but heat does damage over time.

It is important that this gets solved.

Why not just do a clean install and see if the problem goes away? If it doesn't, it's likely to be a hardware problem (bad RAM, I'd suspect).

I have talked to Dan in detail about it an I am of the opinion it is not a heat realted issue. It sounds to me like you need to do a Permissions Repair.

Boot from the OS X CD, Go to the 'Installer' menu in the menu bar, Select 'Run Disk Utility' then when that pops up select you hard disk in the panel on the left, then the 'First Aid' tab on the right. A the bottom of the 'First Aid' panel there is a button that says 'Repair Permissions'. Hit that and go make coffee.

If that doesn't solve it then it it's got me baffled. I've had it happen to me on occasions, but i believe I did a fresh OS install before I worked out how to fix it. Funnily it was on a B&W G3/400 - a very similar aged machine.

As for your sister, I would say that if the hole you have dug yourself is that deep your gonna have to find your own way out ;-)
