Why in the world would you say such a completely ridiculous thing?? Not only will the iMac NOT overheat if left on, it would put ITSELF to sleep automatically after a period of no use.
Because it gets so hot you could cook a fried breakfast on it! (at least when active and on for a while) Plus with my sister you have to say IT WILL otherwise she ignores me.
Why not just do a clean install and see if the problem goes away? If it doesn't, it's likely to be a hardware problem (bad RAM, I'd suspect).
Because I did that every 10 minutes with her PC and if I say that I have to do that with this, I will get a bucket of steaming horse c**p verbally thrown at me. She's like that, <childish immitation> "Oh but you said macs were better...blah blah blah" </childish immitation>
