Apple Computer Inc. has confirmed that the iMac is to be replaced in
September with an entirely new model. With few of the iMac models still on
the shelves of distributors and dealers, the company faces two months with
no mainstream consumer computer available.

Would somebody please send eWeek a picture of an eMac and an iBook?

Geez ...

As for the rest of it ... I'm hard-pressed to have any reaction but "so what?"

Mac buyers won't be switching to PCs because the iMac is in short supply. Heck, if short supply ever hurt Apple, they'd have been out of business long ago ... many, MANY multi-week delays between planned arrivals and actual appearance can easily be recalled by us "old-timers" ...

What this *does* do is allow Apple to continue to sell the iMac at full price right up to the moment the new models appear. I'm not suggesting that they did this deliberately -- the fact that they've broken with their long tradition of not commenting on future products indicates that this is a genuine fubar -- all I'm saying is that this *could* work to their advantage. Consider: the iMac market now breaks down into three categories:
1. People who want a current iMac and will pay full price (or possibly more) to get one.
2. People who were thinking of an iMac in the short-term but will settle for an eMac or low-end G5 or refurb iMac instead.
3. People who will wait, happy that they now KNOW when the new model is coming out and won't get burned.

I really don't think that potential category 4: People PO'd at the delay who decide to buy a Dell out of spite -- amounts to much.

Still, it could hurt their stock price, which would be unfortunate. Luckily, if the past is any indication, any losses will be made up when the new model is announced. If Apple is smart, they'll do a demo of the new model one month (maybe two weeks) prior to actual launch just to get the pundits salivating ...
