Before I took the plunge to X, I'd seen some discussion on this list about the hard drive running out of room, but didn't retain the info that was shared. Now that I have been running Panther for a month or two, (10.3.4) I got my first "start up disk is full" warning today. I've spent the whole day searching forums and I can't find anything that might help explain why. What can I move to another partition? My whole user folder, or just the Library, or Documents?

Personally, I just keep the OS on it's own partition. I have symlink'd (kinda link an Alias but better - it's a UNIX thing that OS X works with quite well) my Documents folder out of my user folder to another partition, and am considering doing so for my Pictures folder (ever expanding iPhoto Library - grrr!!!) also.

I have set up the Users folder on a second partition with a symlink to it on the boot partition. I used the cp or mv command to copy the User folder over (with options to copy the whole tree and maintain privileges).

I've done this on a couple of WallStreets and some Beige G3s. All these machines have 40 Gb HDs with a 7.something boot partition and everything else in the second.
