We (me and my staff) operate a business ( I admit it is small ) I do not plan obsolence in the products I sell but do improve when possible. We have used the same computer (LC575 )for about 9 years - it does the lot, never crashes, never needed to be expanded. A couple of years ago we have bought a second LC575 just in case something happens but have never had to use it.
If I bought say a new Imac it would set me back about $4,800au with printer etc. I could do lots more things with the Imac but nothing that I need to do for the business. Takes 8 times as long for the Imac to start up ( I've timed it). I would have update all the files and records - quite a lot of work and time- for what?
If that's progress, then its not me.
As to vynl records yes I still have them, also 78 resins, and the means to play tem. My Kodak retinette 35mm camera still takes good pictures. Even the real cool shoes I bought in 1967 and surprise surprise they are back in style.
Vic.
In fact, i think it's extremely prudent. What matters is that the computer handles the tasks it needs to, and i have little patience or understanding for businesses who plan obsolesence so they can create more revenue.
I can't think of many businesses that *don't* plan obsolescence into their products, planning for more revenue. Are you still playing your music on vinyl? Still buying your movies on Betamax? Still watching the same TV you had as a child? Still driving your first car?
