I'm not surprised at the attitudes that you were addressing. This list has been historically conservative in it's view towards using modern Macs. I've seen it before...people who still insist on using their 7600's and then complaining when it won't do such and such.
I seem to be having some trouble convincing those folks that I'm not condemning them or insulting their machines, I'm only pointing out that the changes they're complaining about didn't happen overnight. I myself have clients who use and enjoy their original iMacs running 8.1 and up, and until they encounter an obstacle that makes using that machine untenable for their needs, I wouldn't *dream* of forcing them to buy a new computer just because OS X is so whiz-bang cool.
Some people's needs never change, or change veeerrrrry slowly, so they are inclined (particularly once they finally "master" the machine they're using) to resist change. That's fine up to a point, that point being where the incompatibilities start to make a solid impact your computing enjoyment and/or productivity. At that point, however, the wise thing is to let go
I *do* like my older Macs, I have a beige G3 266 that can run 10.2.6 rather well (can't upgrade it beyond that because I don't want to add a video card) and I have a Mac Classic that is my 'museum piece'.
I have some older Macs here at my house too -- a 6205, and a G3-upgraded 7100, along with a 6100, a Powerbook 540 and a IIci in the closet. Most of them run OS 9.1 pretty well, one runs 8.1 (the laptop) and the IIci I think ran 7.6 the last time I fired it up. All of them still have useful features that someone could use, which is why I will eventually donate them to my Mac club to renew and distribute to the needy when I can bear to part with them! :)
My iMac that I am typing this on now works *well* but I can already tell that it's usefulness is coming to an end. I like games. When I was a PC user, I was HORRIBLY ADDICTED to gaming.
I *love* the way you put that. Thanks! :)
I too am horribly addicted to gaming, but by that phrase I mean things like "Dice-It" (Yahtzee) and MacMAME (old console video games like Dig Dug). Not quite in the same league, and there are a few "real" (ie 3D) games I enjoy like Diablo and Giants: Citizen Kabuto.
But like you, as much as I love my current G3 iMac, the directions I'm going in (video editing and Garageband, neither of which I would have become interested in if it hadn't been for Apple) demand more than my beloved iMac can give them. The iMac is still a great machine, whether running OS X or OS 9, but I as a user have started to move on. I don't blame Apple for this except to thank them for opening my eyes to computer possibilities I had never entertained. It is *because* the Mac's OS (9 or X) is so superior that I was allowed to move beyond the "basics" and discover interests and talents I didn't know I had.
What that tells me is that a 1 gig single processor iMac with 1 gig RAM isn't the computer to be playing it on. I see the G5 dual 2 gig in my future...probably within the next 2-3 months. And yes, I can afford it.
I have to wait for my book cheque before entertaining any new hardware purchases, but yes it could be that once I get a more powerful machine, I'll get more interested in cool games ... I kind of hope not though ... it's an expensive habit (in terms of both $$ and productive time lost!). :)
P.S. I'm in South Florida, could you send more info on the user group you belong to?
We're in Orlando and Lakeland, but you are ALWAYS welcome if you're up in this area. If you can't make the main meeting (2nd Thurs of the month), you can always try the Legal/Business SIG (second Tuesday of the month) or the Filemaker SIG (last Friday of the month) or the weekly lunch social group (email me offlist for details). There are also several such MUGs in South Florida on both coasts ... you can find out more at http://www.apple.com/usergroups/
