Personally, I think the Airport base station is the best deal going because it has ports for non-wireless machines, AOL compatibility (not every router has this, believe it or not), Appletalk compatibility and a spare USB port for wireless printer sharing, but having said that if you just need a wireless router, there are others and they are generally cheaper.

Personally, I found AirPort lacking in two areas:
- no ability to change physical MAC address (this can be useful in some cases),
- "strange" DHCP implementation -- right now my Base Station just won't get its address from the DSL modem and is effectively useless as a router; I have one computer in between, but it's much less elegant than it should be, and defies the whole purpose of having a Base Station in the first place. From what I've read, it's true with more people.

AirPort Base Station is great in ideal world (not to mention it looks gorgeous), but in my opinion if you run into trouble (such as I did), you might appreciate the "power user" devices, which allow you to do much more configuration and tinkering -- and are usually cheaper, too.

With AirPort Base Station, I'd recommend to borrow it first and check if it's "compatible" with your Internet Service Provider. Had I done it myself, it'd save me a lot of trouble.

Your mileage may vary. I'd be more than glad if someone proved me wrong. :)
