This is the method that I use on my home network (Two OS 9 Macs and a Windows Me/Linux PC sharing a cable modem net connection with a wired router) for occasional file transfers. I almost always have AIM running anyway for chatting with my friends, family, coworkers and the occasional complete stranger. The software is free, (aim.com) and it's smart enough to bypass the internet when transferring files between computers on the local network, so things go nice and fast. I use AIM for file transfers also because turning on the Mac file sharing seems to make my Macs take twice as long to boot up, and I think that most if not all cross-platform networking programs cost money. And I'm cheap. -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
