Jayleen sent me this info and I trash everything but didn't help much. I'm beginning to think OS X is just slower than 9. :-(
But it is, isn't it...? Since Mac OS X is much more complicated and has much more to do than OS 9, it will always be slower on a same machine than 9. Or am I missing something...?
Darwin, the *nix core of Mac OS X, is way fast.
The system doesn't fall to its knees until you add Aqua etc.
IOW, the core of OS X *is* faster than OS 9. It's the goofy GUI stuff that Apple has added that slows it way down.
Aqua is especially slowed on older machines because it is optimized to take advantage of features on advanced graphics cards... It has to "hobble" itself when those video co-processors aren't available.
FWIW, - Dan.
