With all this talk of resetting the Mac when it hangs, you have in fact
tried the Force Quit option first... right?!? I assume yes because it was
mentioned that relaunching the Finder didn't help. But it is worth saying
as a reminder to all to try a Force Quit before a force reboot.
Yes, I tried it, it did not work... it seems as if Mail goes into a processing frenzy and consumes so much processor time that the whole system freezes as a result. It is just how it appears, and it's strange, as it shouldn't happen in such a modern operating system. What gives this impression is that the system unfreezes for a second or two once in a while, but remains rather unresponsive even within this short time. I presume if I was patient enough, the force quit dialog would eventually appear, but I always give up after a couple of minutes.
