I'd still look to see if you have other software that may be getting in 
the way. It does seem like a software issue, and since it is definitly 
NOT normal, it isn't likely to be with the OS (although it could be 
something corrupt, but a reinstall would fix that).

I would really lean towards something else that is installed is somehow 
altering where the mouse is. Watch when it happens. What were you just 
running or doing? If it goes away after a logout, then it really is very 
likely NOT to be the OS. Something else is being started between when you 
log on and when it goes wrong. So what did you use or stop using or run 
or quit right before it happens. If you look there should be some common 
thread (sometimes it isn't overly obvious... is a USB scanner dropping 
into low power idle mode? Is something else turning on or off, it may 
take more than the obvious looking to find it).
