My iMac Rev B 233Mhz OS 9.2.2 with 160 MB Ram has been shutting down frequently, in various programs, sometimes in the middle of a keystroke.
Elaborate upon "shutting down frequently"... Do you mean the application quits suddenly? Or the whole Mac suddenly seems to loose power or ? What is the exact error message?
Possibly related, sometimes the keyboard (and of course the mouse) simply stops.
Could be a USB problem. Check your cables. Disconnect all other USB peripherals - just leave your mouse and keyboard connected.
I turned on "Show Balloons" in the Finder, then opened "About This Computer" under the Apple. When the cursor is hovered on the memory bar next to the Mac OS icon, the ballon reports that, "This program is currently using 33.4 MB out of the 33.4 MB reserved for it."
This is normal. The system allocates memory from its own pools dynamically, as it needs.
Also, should memory allocated to apps follow any rule?
If an application uses memory from its own partition, then its performance may improve if you allocate more to it. But many applications use temp memory - which is allocated dynamically off the system's pool. You have no control over those.
