There sure is, its called DivX and its available at DivX.com They have
versions for OS8/9 and OSX. I've been using it for just over a couple of
years and its great. I am also using OS9.2.2

As far as I know, I've never been able to get Quicktime to play .AVI files.
I don't think it can unless you get Quicktime Pro, and even then that's just
a half baked guess on my part.

Basically I had the same problem as you two years ago and someone pointed me
to DivX and I've been fine since. It also cured my drinking problem and my
dog's lame back leg.
