There sure is, its called DivX and its available at DivX.com They have versions for OS8/9 and OSX. I've been using it for just over a couple of years and its great. I am also using OS9.2.2
As far as I know, I've never been able to get Quicktime to play .AVI files. I don't think it can unless you get Quicktime Pro, and even then that's just a half baked guess on my part. Basically I had the same problem as you two years ago and someone pointed me to DivX and I've been fine since.
