I've been having trouble getting Quicktime to play AVI files. Is there a good shareware AVI player available for classic mac?

You have confused "player" with "codec".
QuickTime Player is an app skin for QuickTime. Ditto for apps like Play It Cool (my fav).
QuickTime is the Apple technology that plays videos. It recognizes and decodes the data within .mov, .avi, .mpg, .mp3, etc, files by using a CODEC. Upgrading to QuickTime Pro simply adds the ability to use the encoding side of a CODEC.
Microsoft's .avi, like Apple's .mov, is simply a container file. Within them can be data that uses many difference CODECs.
.avi files typically use one of three sets of codecs:
1) Microsoft proprietary codecs -- forgetit, you can't play these on a Mac, even with MS Windows Media Player for Mac.
2) Indeo codecs -- these are available for download via the QuickTime control panel.
3) The MPEG-4 "enhancement" codecs, such as 3ivX and DivX.
Start by installing the Indeo AVI codecs. Then get the latest DivX codec from http://www.divx.com/.
Note that you have to reboot after installing a codec. QuickTime isn't smart enough to notice them otherwise. :\
