I just bought a Maxtor 200GB drive ($99) and put it into a new MacAlly 100AF Firewire case. However, I can't get it to mount on the desktop of my G4 iMac nor does it show up in Disk Utility. Have I wasted my money? I thought that I could partition it into two 100GB partitions and use one as a back-up for my G4 iMac and the other for my G4 Powerbook.
System Profiler sees it, or...?
No.
Know about the firmware update? http://www.macally.com/techsupport/drivers.html

Looks like that is the problem so I'm screwed. I have two Macs running 10.3.6 and two running 9.1. I can only update the firmware with a Mac running 10.1.x through 10.3.5.
So, boot up from an OS X CD (other than 10.3.6), format the firewire drive if needed, install the OS with a minimum configuration, load the firmware updater on the disk, run it and you are set.
If it won't run from the drive, install the 200Gb drive into the computer, install a pre-OSX.3.6 version on it and so on.
