No, it really is a button. Press it. Trust us. If it doesn't press (it doesn't go far, it isn't like it is an on/off clicking switch, it is just a momentary contact button), then it may be jammed. They were known to jam, and that would result in an apparently dead iMac as you pressed the button on the keyboard, and the iMac immediatly shut itself back off because it detected the front button as being pressed as well. If it is jammed, you may be able to wiggle it free, otherwise you have to remove the front face plate to pop it loose. But it really is a button. The little shell around the LED is the button. It looks like a little grey donut with the LED in the middle of it. If that is missing, see if you can see the electrical contact button behind it, then press it with something skinny like a toothpick.
