Whatever you do, don't set him up with GIMP as someone else suggested. It will be an exercise in frustration. This comes from one who has used Linux a good bit and is a computer geek. If I find it annoying and tedious to use, I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to someone who is not as experienced in modern OSs.

Of the newsgroups i follow figure this one probably has the most sensible participants!
I have a friend, new to both current computers and digital photography.
He purchased a used G3 from another friend; has had only a smattering of computer knowledge, as his last computer was a Commodore 64 which he still has and is working!
The G3 is in working order and a small (10 gig) yet functioning hard drive;
also it has 9.2 on it; the purchaseincluded a 17 inch monitor
and all of the appropriate operating software.
He also acquired this past February a Canon G3 digital; however other than a disc to load the images on a computer, no other software was included. I suspect a pawn shop purchase but then who am I to ask?
I looked at the G3, pictures can be taken, and they can be loaded on my iBook
(G3) without problem.
He's having enough trouble navigating the computer, figure get him get
happy on 9.2 then
gently ease him into the OSX family, but not before everything is OK on
his end.
He also purchased an Epson 740 colour printer for $10.00 with enough
fresh cartridges
to sink a ship ata garage sale, I checked the printer, it works very well!
---- Here's the question!
He is not flush with money, however what computer software would you suggest to him, so he can fiddle with the digital images.
He wants to be able to do "lots of changes," as he said to me.
He has a friend with PS 5 for the Mac however is not sure what the word PhotoShop means!
His iSP is dial-up only, and the telephone gets unplugged when he uses the computer.
Ideas, please...
