Subject: Debating swtich to OS X...need advice

Quick question about OS X...

1) How slow will this be. I have a Rev. B iMac, Sonnets Harmoni
Upgrade (=
500 mhz 256 cache), 512 MB ram, 20 GB hard drive

With sufficient modifications, you should be able to run OS X at a
VERY basic speed. I *really* wouldn't recommend this -- OS X belongs
on more modern hardware. I have Panther running on an old Wallstreet
II powerbook (which is from roughly the same period as the iMac you
have), and while it does work, it's not very satisfying in terms of
speed. If I depended on that machine for ANYTHING other than the
occasional web check or email check, I would be frustrated.

Your machine, as you describe it, is a great OS 9 machine. Use it
that way until you can get a modern Mac.

500 mhz is sufficient to run OSX. There are plenty of Pismo owners out there running 10.4 on their 500mhz machines, not to mention a lot of Titanium 'book owners (like myself) running at 500mhz. Plus add in a lot of real 500mhz iMac users. Not everyone you give advice to should have to go buy a new machine.

2) Will the hard drive be large enough?

No, that's fine ... until you start adding your own files. Then it
won't be enough.

OSX takes up about three gigs of space. That leaves 16+ for files, which is plenty. Unless you're doing video, in which case you might need a pair of 300GB drives.
