With sufficient modifications, you should be able to run OS X at a
VERY basic speed. I *really* wouldn't recommend this -- OS X belongs
on more modern hardware.

Tiger rocks on my 300-MHz Smurf. Faster than OS 9 for most things.
LOL For all that OS X's Finder is slow - takes quite a long time to
display a big window full of files... It's only a tad slower than OS
9's Finder ... and it's still 10 to 45 seconds FASTER than Win2k on
my housemate's 1.4 GHz PC. It should be noted that the same folder
opened on our 1.5 GHz PowerBook (panther) isn't significantly faster.
Bad design there, Apple.
Another aspect is web browsing. The new Safari is far faster than
any other browser that can run on OS 9... AND it does CSS well.
Compared to using a modern Mac, it's fairly difficult -- you have to
partition the drive, and pray that 8GB (the maximum space OS X
allows for install on that model) is sufficient for your boot system
and apps.
Ya. 8 GB can be tight, if you have lots of apps. But you just put
you on the other partition.
