Subject: Debating swtich to OS X...need advice
Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Quick question about OS X...

1) How slow will this be. I have a Rev. B iMac, Sonnets Harmoni Upgrade (=
500 mhz 256 cache), 512 MB ram, 20 GB hard drive

With sufficient modifications, you should be able to run OS X at a VERY basic speed. I *really* wouldn't recommend this -- OS X belongs on more modern hardware. I have Panther running on an old Wallstreet II powerbook (which is from roughly the same period as the iMac you have), and while it does work, it's not very satisfying in terms of speed. If I depended on that machine for ANYTHING other than the occasional web check or email check, I would be frustrated.

Your machine, as you describe it, is a great OS 9 machine. Use it that way until you can get a modern Mac.

2) Will the hard drive be large enough?

No, that's fine ... until you start adding your own files. Then it won't be enough.

3) Currently have a Cannon i320 color printer. Will this still work?

A qualified "yes." Canon has an OS X driver for this machine, but I don't know what version of OS X it was designed to cover.

4) Currently have a HandSpring Visor Edge. Will this still connect?

I have a Handspring Visor. Works fine in OS X.

5) What software will need to be upgraded (I have AppleWorks 5, a few game=
s, Quicken '98, and Connectix Virtual PC and Microsoft Office '98)?

All of it should be upgraded, but I think everything you mention minus Virtual PC will work under Classic (if you install that, and if you have to do that then that 20GB is *really* inadequate)

6) What is rough cost of the OS?

129.99 for a single license, 199.99 for a 5-license family pack.

7) How difficult is this?

Compared to using a modern Mac, it's fairly difficult -- you have to partition the drive, and pray that 8GB (the maximum space OS X allows for install on that model) is sufficient for your boot system and apps. Again, I really, REALLY don't recommend you do this. Buy a Mac that was designed for OS X, run 9.2.2 on the machine you have now, and pat yourself on the back for being extremely clever when the day comes to transfer your data and you can do it extremely quickly via Firewire Target Disk Mode because YOU were smart enough to invest in the HARMONi.

Claiming that the Macintosh is inferior to Windows because most people use Windows is like saying that all other restaurants are inferior to McDonald's.
