Apple's first line of AppleCare represenatives are unhelpful assholes. The next line of representatives want to be helpful, but can't always figure out how to do it.
The last line of reps are very helpful. The trick is working your way past the flotsam to the people that will help you. The first thing to do is call back--the first person you got was an idiot, you might not get them or a comperable idiot the second time. If you do get a moron, read them AppleCare's terms and conditions right off the AppleCare page on Apple's site: http://www.apple.com/support/products/acra/ It clearly states that shipping costs are covered. Keep reading the page to them again and again until you get shuffled up to somoene that will help you. That's what I did when my G3 ibook crapped out--they weren't helpful at first, but kept at it and ended up being given a G4 ibook as a free replacement.
