What's wrong with just keeping it simple?

If a disk volume has errors, use Apple's Disk Utility to repair it.

If Disk Utility can't fix it, then repave it from your backup.

Now, if you're in the position where you just HAVE to HAVE that data, 
because you failed to make a good backup, then suck it up.  Buy 
DiskWarrior or Data Rescue and if they work - breath a sigh of 
relief.  And if they don't, well, either way actually, then whap 
yourself upside the head for not having a good backup.
