The loss of gas in incandescent bulbs is the cause of them going out more frequently than fluorescent bulbs because the gas stops oxygen from reaching the filament which would be destroyed instantly if oxygen were to reach it. The reason why Incandescent bulbs have been used is because they are dirt cheap to manufacture.
