Such devices should be *disconnected* when installing Apple updates.
Having such connected can sometimes cause Apple's installer to hang
for a long time, while it's looking around for components. They can
also cause difficulties if the Mac's firmware is being updated
because that process often includes "zapping" the nvram -- which can
then make the Mac spend an inordinate amount of time sniffing those
peripherals during the reboot.
