The updates are large because Mac OS X includes quite a few 3rd party items, many open source -- eg: WebKit (Safari's underbelly), Apache (web sharing), CUPS (printing), Gutenprint (the bazillion print drivers). Those items are usually released as complete new blobs (installations), not tiny incremental patches. Since the open source community is mostly volunteers from the edu world, the bigger releases tend to occur in late summer or early fall before school, college, etc, grabs their time...

Walter, I'm sorry - that's just not smart. If the dmg doesn't mount correctly, then it is CORRUPTED. You may be able to futz around with it, and ultimately get it to work ... but then what???? It's CORRUPTED. If it updates your system, you will have A CORRUPTED SYSTEM.
