Here is the situation and I hope someone can help. I have 2 servers on
the same lan. One of the machines was hosting a.com, and we need to move it
to the other machine. So, we can copy the directories over, export the
registry then edit and re-import it. Voila, done. Not so fast. The DNS
TTL problem. Mail will still go to the old server for some time. So the
question arises that I need to get the mail out of the old boxes, and into
the new ones. I have 2 possible solutions, but I don't know if either will
work, but whatever the solution, it needs to be automated, as there are FAR
to many users to do it all by hand. Here they are:
1) Set up some sort of forwarding for the entire domain (to the new ip
address). It would need to forward the mail to the correct box on the other
end, and not to just some random box. unfortunately, I don't even know if
this is possible, let alone how to do it, any help?
2) Since they are on a lan, couldn't I just point the Mail folder directory
on the old machine to a mapped folder on the new machine? Then both servers
would be placing mail into the new folder correct? Can this be done safely?
Having 2 servers using the same mail folders? Once again, I don't know if
this can even be done.
I figure someone around here has to have moved domains to new boxes before,
and how did you get around the DNS caching problem? Thank you in advance
for any help you can provide.
