For the IMGate project, I follow the postfix users list and there is
currently a thread "Protocol error with Hotmail server"
The answer below to my question reflect the same point that Dusty Carden
made here a couple of months ago.
The conclusion for us Imail admins is that checking "Refuse NUL senders" in
Imail effectively breaks Imail's compliance with RFC and prevents complying
mail servers from bouncing mail back to Imail.

Doing so would cause mail loops all over the place. Even hotmail at least
generates correct mail bounces with nul senders.
I thought hotmail ran qmail actually so it surprises me that they would be
broken this way. We do see these errors from lots of sites other than hotmail
though:
