Another tool/url I use is www.whois.net.  If you don't know who the
registrar is, this will tell you.  This site also has a section that shows
deleted domain names.   I've not seen that anywere else.

Additionally, there is a software tool called mozzle that with all kinds of
domain name functionality.  I use this to search for suitable domain names
for new clients as well as to query existing domain info.  You can get more
info at mozzle.com

If you do a WHOIS search against whois.internic.net you
will get the name/URL of the registrar the domain was
registered via.
