This discussion brings to mind a *nix script I saw for sale on the web.  It
was advertised as being configurable to check the internic database daily
after they update it and it would look for any domain name you put into a
separate text file.  If the name was not found it would attempt to register
it.  For those of you who have clients willing to wait it out, you might go
looking for this script to at least automate the process and avoid losing
the name to some one else who might be interested in it as well.
