Lest you think only MS and Ipswitch are the only vendors out to do us all in, here is an off-topic story that should make your morning:
We donating hosting to a number of Rotary clubs in our area. The domain name for one of the clubs was registered with Network Solutions (now Verisign) and coming up for renewal. We've been less than happy with NetSol, so rather than just renew, we applied through another registrar (registrars.com) to transfer and renew. A couple of weeks later, registrars.com notifies us that NetSol has denied the transfer. Keep in mind that I am the primary contact for this club's domain name, and NetSol never contact me about a transfer. So we applied for a transfer again, figuring that they lost the confirmation query email that should have gone to me. After three attempts, we still couldn't get the name transferred, and each time NetSol made no attempt to actually contact me. So far, it's just incompetence by NetSol, but the story gets worse. The record for this club's domain name expired on October 3. I thought this would be great, because we could register it from scratch with the new registrar. Only problem -- NetSol still has the name in the database and refuses to release it. I've gone around in circles with their customer service (who remind me of characters out of the Dilbert comic strip), and their bottom line is this: * We can't transfer the domain name unless the record is current, meaning we have to renew with them first (which is what we were trying to avoid to begin with). * They won't release the domain name until they purge their database, which will be in 60-90 days. * But they will block DNS referrals to this domain name if the record isn't current (renewed). In essence, they are holding the name as hostage unless we renew with them. I started the transfer process in August, and it just keeps dragging along. There's no way I'm going to renew anybody with NetSol henceforth -- they make Microsoft look like the Red Cross.
