I encountered this several years ago, and if I recall correctly, it was a 
posting of Len's on this list that pointed me to http://www.stunnel.org, 
which solved the problem.

I agree with you here, and I can't explain why the SSL has been 
unreliable.  My view, though, is that there is a free and relatively easy 
workaround.  Annoying, yes; showstopper, no.

FYI, I don't recall encountering a single serious bug in any of the 7.x 
versions.  Most of the bugs only affect a small percentage of 
customers.  Yes, there are some serious bugs, and quite a few minor 
ones.  But with a product of this type, it's going to happen.
