If the problem was an infected mail being sent by the virus to the subscribe
address - this would even be WORSE.  Because it would imply that IPswitch is
NOT virus scanning inbound messages.  If they ran DECLUDE, that subscribe
message would never reach the listserver.

One  of our guys just suggested that this may be the work of Klez, and
I think this explanation has some merit. Check this out:

Though  I  share  some  of  your  suspicions  of  a plain old IMAILSRV
malfunction,  but I've *never* seen anything this crazy happen with an
Imail-hosted  list.  I'm inclined to believe the root problem is on an
infected or otherwise malfunctioning client, probably within Ipswitch.

At  the  same  time, IMAILSRV's lack of onboard double opt-in would be
the  underlying  vulnerability  being  exploited,  so  here may be its
clarion call...
