I don't know about Verizon, but EarthLink will not allow  you to use your 
own smtp server. You can pop to any server but smtp has to go through them 
when you are on a dialup account.

That is not true.   If you set the smtp authentication option on the 
client,
then they don't need to have the 'relay for addresses' set.
