I'm not sure about using Verizon's SMTP for outgoing. I have had problems with them relaying mail for non-Verizon e-mails. They also have a low size limit on sending out large attachments ( .5 mbs? ), even when not using their SMTP. I am personally using IMAIL SMTP authentication with a Verizon DSL and haven't had any problems. I'd contact Verizon if you are sure that the SMTP Auth is accurate on both the client and server side. I'd be interesting in hearing what finally fixes it.

Unless you allow them access to IMail by granting their IP address in the SMTP "Relay for Addresses" then their outgoing SMTP setting should be Verizon's SMTP server if they are the ISP. So, make sure on the email that is hosted with you, their SMTP is Verizon's.
