You are very much NOT alone and it took forever to get to the bottom of
this. It boils down to how quick/powerful your server is and how much mail
is left on your server. The only way I have been able to remedy this is to
stop users leaving messages on the server and the problem has ceased.
Although this is not ideal Ipswitch blames Outlook and I am wondering if and
when we upgrade from 6.06 to 7.1 the problem will re-occur. The only reason
I have been given for the duplicates is that the server is not updating the
index files for the users mailboxes quickly enough before the users are
downloading their mail again and therefore it is sending them all their mail
again and again and ....... I am running a PIII 400 with 8Gb drive and NT4
SP6a, we only have 30 users maximum some in the office and others via Web
and so the server is less than taxed with this workload. But my users are
very poor at keeping their outlook.pst files tidy and manageable and some
are 100Mb+ which might account for slow updates between .pst files and
server mailboxes .... I dunno .... I'm just thinking aloud but feel free to
discuss.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Duplicate E-mail Messages in Client SOftware

Can anyone can shed some light... on receiving duplicate messages when
they have already been marked as read.

For example, I have my e-mail client to leave messages on server for 2
days, this way I can pop from home or work. I have posted this problem
in the past, but told it was a bug in Outlook. The only way to get the
duplicates to stop is clear the messages from server and then reset to
leave for 2-5 days, whatever. Then mysteriously with no apparent rhyme
or reason, duplicates start again. So I must clear server, clear
duplicates, etc. This is a wide spread problem among our users who do
same thing.

Yesterday I downloaded and installed 'The Bat' e-mail client at the
suggestion on another thread (nice product BTW), and low and behold same
thing happens with their software too with duplicate messages being
already marked as read. So I am thinking this is not an Outlook bug
anymore. I run Outlook 2000. Help. Thanks.
