I completely understand your philosophy on not using a catchall, and I would love to not have to worry about it, but we had problems with a client way back when that emailed some important stuff they needed done but they boned the address and we never got it and they never got an error message about it for whatever reason. Since then we check out nobody@ daily. It's hardly even a 1/2 dozen addresses a day that I get to it, so it's not a hassle for me. The bottom line is that email communication for my company is critical to say the least and we can't take chances on lost communication.
I searched my logs, no "unknown users" rejects for any SMTPD.
