With regard to Web Messaging /POP3 and corrupt mailboxes several hundred messages in the main.mbx seemed a bit excessive to me. Of course the folks who had these mail box corruption problems were also
Sharing an account among 10 different people and using POP and Web Messaging for access.
Changing the POP3 clients to check same account every minute
Using email notifiers to check for mail every minute.
I haven't widely deployed IMAP, so I can't comment directly.

what do you call overly large, we are a small compnay about 45 users I choose Imap so I could leave mail and folders sitting on server, and not have to worry about people going into there outlook setup and unchecking the option to leave mail on server.
but it seems there are some issues with imap that I need to reconsider my thoughts and move to pop3
