When I first installed e-mail for my employer in 1995 I distributed a set of e-mail guidelines in an attempt to educate users about e-mail. Two points I made then and still make today were: "e-mail is as secure as a postcard. Anybody along the route can read what you wrote on a postcard, anybody along the route can read what you wrote in e-mail. You have no assurance that e-mail is from who it says it is From: any more than you can be sure that a piece of mail is from who it says it is from." My users seemed to "get it" that it's not really a loophole in e-mail. It's the way it's always been, even in the snail mail world.
