[Sorry - I posted this with the wrong subject earlier]

Our school is now part of a New Zealand-wide VPN for schools. A feature of this is that we have a centrally-provided email server (whose type is unknown to me). We did the change during the school holidays. The result of this is that there are many emails waiting on IMSmail mostly incoming, but some outgoing, which I need to rescue. We use Thunderbird as the email client.

Outgoing: The VPN won't let IMSmail connect to remote domains to send mail. Is it possible to setup IMSmail such that it uses an external SMTP server, and is it too late for the ones failing to go.

Incoming:
1) I could setup 2 accounts for each user, and get Tbird to read both new and old email servers until the old server is empty. I would then need to revisit the clients at some stage to remove the redundant server account (and eventually the server itself).
2) Or, I could process the waiting IMSmail and either re-send it to the new server, or perhaps import it directly into Tbird. This has the advantage that the users' setup would only need visiting once, and I could disband IMSmail straight after the transfer.

If (2) is possible, I am wondering if I could harness the built-in 'mail forwarding' feature? But it's probably too late once the .msg files have reached the users' directories. Or could I set up the forwarding info in each user's mailbox, then move the mail back to 'incoming'? I should point out that the users email addresses are unchanged with the move to the new email server. This would also imply a solution to 'Outgoing' above.

I should be grateful for any advice and recommendations.

May I take this opportunity for thanking the posters on this list? Although I haven't posted much, I have nevertheless gleaned heaps of useful information over the 7 years that I have been using it.
