Thanks for your prompt reply. I actually looked at the IMS control panel several times before, and managed not to see the box for 'gateway'. Duh! I'll opt for configuring Thunderbird for reading old & new servers until the queues are empty. They can use the same inbox.

Sure. Set the "gateway" setting to the external SMTP server, and all mail will be forwarded there.
 
Incoming:
1) I could setup 2 accounts for each user, and get Tbird to read both new and old email servers until the old server is empty. I would then need to revisit the clients at some stage to remove the redundant server account (and eventually the server itself).
