We considered this scheme and (as is obvious from my previous post)
rejected it. The data I have in front of me is for 18,990 users.
Of the 962 (26*37) possible first two letters we allow in usernames,
655 are in use. The top 20 are:
317 ma 167 st 150 ca 132 be
223 ja 165 sa 146 ba 131 de
201 ch 162 ka 145 sc 130 ro
181 da 157 je 138 mi 130 ha
176 sh 150 ra 136 jo 121 me
Also, 78% (14806) of the users would be in directories with more than
31 entries (the worst case under our current users/MM/NN/username scheme),
and just over 50% (9533) would be in directories with > 63 entries.
YMMV,
John
