I'm not sure what you mean. We have a symlink in root.afs (ir) that points
to ir.stanford.edu. The official name is /afs/ir.stanford.edu. We have never
had complaints from anyone that they couldn't find /afs/ir/.... Most people
know to use the name /afs/ir.stanford.edu if they mention a path to someone.
Our password file does have /afs/ir/users in it, which has also never caused
anyone any problems and also makes the password file smaller. If it ever
became a problem its easy enough to change.
