Here at NERSC (National Energy Research Supercomputer Center) we transitioned
to AFS and maintained our old home directory structure so that users would not
need to learn anything new. In our case that is

/afs/nersc.gov/u/<group>/<user>

A few of the groups are quite large ~200 members but most are not. Currently we
have over 115+ groups and 4500 users so the average group has less than 50
members which we find quite workable. The group designations are related to the
account that is charged for the user's time and to a lesser extent the site the
user comes from. The key was the user already knows it and is familiar with it.

A question we have is, has anyone developed a method of cross platform dotfiles
so that a user can have a single home directory in AFS on multiple Unix like
platforms? Currently we segregate dotfiles into separate subdirectories
(/hpux, /sunos, ...) in each user's home directory.
