Hi all, thanks for all the responses. Can I start by trying to clarify what Allan was saying, it might seem simple to you Allan but what you were saying was not clear to me. As I understand it so far: - you believe in that "while everything exists in God, God also exists beyond creation" - panentheism - but that God is only conscious of being God within humanity - and that God works with what God has to work with
(one question this raises for me is do you allow for the possibility of God acting unconsciously?) apart from that though, in terms of answering my original question what this boils down to doesn't seem much different to Peters answer... "which is in the form of a question is, "Does God act, except through people?" My hunch is that God has set the creation process going but that it is up to creation (and that includes us) to respond to the lure of God's love and move the whole show towards that completion that is described as oneness with God." - if you see a difference, please explain it? Assuming some similarity though my question for both of you then is, if God acts through humanity where do we draw the line between God acting and us acting? where do we draw the line between us and God identity wise? can we draw this line? should we? do you even? Sue thanks for your contribution, you and Allan always create some great conversations and debates which the rest of us are the richer for. In response to you, although it's a bit of an aside I just wanted to say that while we can't limit God (or anythng else) to our own understanding, meaning by it's very nature must fit within our own understanding. It must be bottom up for us, or as I'd prefer to express it in non-heirarchical terms, our understanding of meaning must come from within ourselves. But maybe this doesn't conflict with what you were saying?
