The process can be quite civil and orderly. With PSARC/2007/688[1] I found the process to be good in helping me to cover the bases and to document what is being done better. I think my experience with man(1) improvements was less painful because there wasn't any real controversy. The Conary project started with controversy (search the archives) and I think that any unfriendliness is likely a follow-on from this.
