Hello to intarea,
I have read again draft-baccelli-manet-multihop-communication-04:
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-baccelli-manet-multihop-communication-04
I think it is worth pursuing as knowledge shared by people with
extensive experience in IP on wireless-LAN networks to people working on
newer generation short-range wireless networks (BTLE, 802.15.4, more).
Essentially, the document reads that [contrary to typical wired links]
in wireless links it is difficult to make the otherwise intuitive
assumption that if A hears B then B hears A. Similar to this
assumption, there are 2 or 3 other assumptions not to make.
This has immediate effect on protocols such as ND: DAD would
fail because even if B receives NS from A, A would not receive the reply
NA from B, and would thus think it's alone on that link (whereas, in
truth, there is a duplicate - B).
Since this document was first issued, I worked on a number of projects
and interacted with a number of people trying to make IP networks out of
devices with a single radio interface. Building a wifi range extender
is the typical endeavour with some success, but many disillusions as
well. The effort is always laudable, especially because it brings in IP.
I am happy the document does not go as far as making a recommendation,
because, sensing the intent, I would disagree with the recommendation.
Reading the document, and thinking what the recommendation could be, my
own comment - IMHO - is to not give up using IP on new-generation
wireless links, but to improve the layers below IP such as to have IP
run unmodified. Second, is to use two radio interfaces on whatever is
called an IP Router. This applies to many current works at IETF.
That said, I believe this document is in good shape, has good language,
is easy to read and agree with.
If there are any comments from the community on this document I will be
happy to discuss about it on the intarea list.
Alex
