I agree labels are the main method of conveying information about
devices, so the more control and automation the better.
And, once we've defined labels for something - that's the text that
should be used for refering to that object in alerts and anywhere else.
Otherwise what's the point of defining the label.

Hi All,
Interesting thread, that I though I would like to chime in on.
1: Switch port states.
Ok, here is my take in it: Being able to ACK a specific port can be
useful, but I think it should be more intelligent.
If I connect a device to a port, and set that device to 'ignore outages'
then the port should auto ACK if the device attached goes down And the
link goes down.
Further to this, it could be possible to add a sub-setting on the
devices Behavior like 'Auto ACK attached switch port'.
2: Switch port labels.
I would like to cast a vote (feat.req.) for more 'advanced' labels. :-)
More specific, it would be cool if we could use the functions from the
probe file format to set the label, so EVAL's can be done, like:
${eval: $_PortAlias != "" ? "Uplink to $_PortAlias" : $_PortName }
Also, should it be possible to truncate a label?
Like, in the label editor, something like: Max label characters: nn
If set, the label would show as 'Very long lab...' and I would suggest
that a tooltip is then shown with the full label on mouse-over.
Should such a feature have a global default setting, and should it be
server-setting or client (IMR) setting?
Chime in,

I'd like the ability to leave switch ports on a map, but not have
their state affect the status of the switch.
We have ports connected to customers that I'd like to be able to
graph, but I don't want to receive alarms about the state of those
ports - even though I do want to receive alarms about the device in
general.
Is there a a way to do this?
